We are all familiar with Portlandia's hilarious "Put A Bird On It" sketch poking fun at the ubiquitous use of the bird motif in decor. Well, lately I have been seeing elephants everywhere I look. Are they the new bird?
That was a funny sketch, unlike the "Cacao" sketch, which I found slightly disturbing. What's your take on on popularity vs. cliche? As I write this, I see my red elephant in plain view and wonder if he should go the way of the bird wall decals I left behind. So, I guess I have two questions: 1. Do you think trends like birds and elephants have a certain shelf life? and, 2. How long until my hanging air plant terrarium is cliche? Too late?
Good questions. I think the trick with trends is to only embrace the things that really speak to you. If that red elephant makes you smile or has meaning for you then I say you should keep it. Even Carrie Brownstein admits to still having items with birds on them in her own home. On the other hand, If you are just hanging on to it because elephants seems to be cool these days then I think that is something to pay attention to. Ditto on the hanging air plant terrarium. Do what you love.
